AMERICA'S 250 BIRTHDAY

America will celebrate its 250th anniversary (Semiquincentennial) on July 4, 2026, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  Nationwide, the celebration focuses on reflecting on the nation’s past, honoring contributions, and looking toward the future, with a goal to engage all 350 million Americans.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is leading celebrations for America’s 250th birthday by promoting the "Happy Birthday, America" pledge, encouraging the public to fly the American flag from now through July 2026.  The initiative honors 250 years of freedom, with the VFW offering special commemorative 250th-anniversary flags and kits through their store.

Key elements of the VFW’s 250th-anniversary initiatives include:

  • "Happy Birthday, America" Pledge: A campaign urging citizens to pledge to fly the American flag to celebrate the milestone.
  • Commemorative Flags: The VFW Store is selling limited-edition 250th-anniversary flags and kits.
  • Focus on Service: The celebration emphasizes that the nation's 250 years of freedom were made possible by veterans.
  • Military Branch Anniversaries: The VFW is also honoring the 250th anniversaries of the U.S. Army (June 14, 2025) and the U.S. Navy (Oct. 13, 2025) as part of the broader celebration.
  • Local Post Activities: Individual VFW posts, such as Post 4608 in Ledyard, CT, are hosting events to mark the anniversary.

The VFW aims to bring communities together to honor the nation's history, the stars and stripes, and the service of veterans.
